Navigating responsibility: carbon offsetting, reduction and transparency at AXIS Aviation

By Kerstin Mumenthaler, Managing Director, AXIS Aviation Europe

Impactful and effective environmental initiatives are crucial to how private aviation businesses operate. At AXIS Aviation, we acknowledge and address the complexities of balancing corporate activities with our responsibility to the planet. We are actively taking steps to manage and minimise our environmental impact by adopting forward-thinking solutions. Through operational strategies, offsetting initiatives, and increased transparency, we ensure accountability and commitment to our environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets.

Sustainable strategies

AXIS Aviation has implemented numerous measures aimed at reducing the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with each flight. Efficient flight planning ensures that unnecessary flight-miles are not consumed, and surplus CO2 emissions are not released.

Our in-house dispatch team works closely with air traffic control to secure direct routes that avoid unnecessary detours and minimise flight distance. Real-time weather data is constantly updated and integrated into flight planning up until the time of departure, to avoid areas of high-wind resistance and turbulence. The team also utilises optimal cruising altitude to reduce fuel consumption.

Strategically planning for refuelling stops to avoid carrying excess fuel, as well as ensuring only essential equipment, baggage and materials are loaded onto the aircraft further minimises unnecessary weight and fuel burn.

The use of ground power units instead of jet engines for ground operations and working with local food suppliers are other examples of how we’re limiting our emissions. By focusing on efficient resource use, we assure that every aspect of our flights, from take-off to onboard catering to landing, is managed as effectively as possible, with impact in mind.

We recognise that cutting emissions entirely isn't currently possible in aviation. However, operational solutions can be implemented to minimise the ecological demands of our industry.

Carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting programmes can be utilised to limit the release of CO2. At AXIS Aviation, we take a proactive approach by offering our customers the opportunity to offset the CO2 produced during their flights. This practice compensates for emissions by funding projects that absorb or reduce carbon elsewhere, such as reforestation or renewable energy projects.

Our customers can participate in tailored offset programmes, like investing in sustainable teak plantations in Costa Rica through the Teaka project. For every ton of carbon emitted during a flight we plant a teak tree, which has the potential to sequester significant amounts of CO2 over its lifetime. This not only mitigates the environmental impact of air travel but also contributes to restoring pastureland in Costa Rica.

Our offsetting programmes are set apart by our direct involvement. Unlike many third-party offset programmes, AXIS Aviation manages the Teaka initiative, ensuring full control and alignment with our sustainability goals.

Transparency and accountability

Transparency is key to making meaningful progress. AXIS Aviation has partnered with Azzera to integrate its Celeste emissions management software into our operations. Through this innovative platform, our customers gain real-time insights into their fuel usage and emissions. Whether through our AXIS Aviation Owner App or directly via reports, owners can easily track their environmental footprint and manage offsetting costs.

This level of visibility empowers our customers to make informed choices about their flights, that prioritise sustainability, enhancing their travel experience while promoting environmental stewardship. Whether choosing more efficient routes or participating in carbon offsetting programmes, this as a critical step in making our business more responsible in the long term.

A shared commitment

Through thoughtful reduction strategies, transparent reporting and meaningful projects, we aim to shape the future of our sector by fostering a culture of consciousness and accountability. By providing our customers with the tools they need to make environmentally focused decisions, we encourage a sense of responsibility that benefits both travellers and the planet.

We’re committed to continually improving and refining our approach. AXIS Aviation is proud to play its part in shaping a more mindful and considerate industry, one flight at a time.
